Nanoplasmonics beyond classical response

Nanoplasmonic structures may exhibit nonlocal response when shrinking their critical dimensions to a regime where quantum phenomena are commonly expected to become important. This talk will address a semi-classical hydrodynamic description as a first natural attempt that goes beyond the common description based on the local-response approximation, i.e., Ohm’s law. Including the hydrodynamic response of the Fermi gas adds an intrinsic length scale to the electrodynamics, thus smearing the possible development of singular response inherent to a local-response approximation. In contrast to insight from the local-response approximation, transverse-light excitation may also exhibit oscillations above the plasma frequency with a longitudinal nature, i.e., bulk-like plasmons. Starting from a generalized nonlocal wave equation, consequences for plasmonic structures supporting enhanced light-matter interactions will be discussed. The relevance to experiments will also be discussed with the example of blueshifting for silver nanoparticles (down to 3 nm in diameter).
