A Taste of Cherry

Directed by Abbas Kiarostami
35mm film (Iran, 1997, 95 min.)

Winner of the Golden Palm at Cannes, the film that brought Kiarostami to the attention of Western critics and audiences. Homayoun Ershadi plays Mr. Badii, a man search of someone to help him do a specific and difficult job. “Kiarostami, one of the great filmmakers of our time, is a master at filming landscapes and constructing parablelike narratives whose missing pieces solicit the viewer’s active imagination. Taste of Cherry actually says a great deal about what it was like to be alive in the 1990s, and despite its somber theme, this masterpiece has a startling epilogue that radiates with wonder and euphoria” – Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader. Rest in peace, Abbas Kiarostami
