CEVE Seminar Series 2017 - Dynamic Testing of Large Concrete Dams to Support Numerical Model Development

In the presentation, it is shown that forced vibration tests under harmonic loading can be used not only to characterize the dynamic properties of large concrete dams but also to identify previously neglected important characteristics that influence their behaviour. Effects of water compressibility, reservoirs bottom absorption, water levels, construction joints, ice cover and cracking will be highlighted with dynamic tests performed on Outardes 3 Gravity dam, Emosson arch dam and Daniel-Johnson multiple arch dam. Numerical models developed to account for these effects will be presented and studies related to the seismic safety of the dams will be presented. In particular, the size and the complexity of the Daniel Johnson multiple arch dam, the largest dam of this type in the world, presented a major challenge compared to other case studies, for the experimental as well as for the numerical work. Finite element model updating and seismic safety analyses of Daniel-Johnson arch dam using a novel global-local approach will be described.

Biography of Patrick Paultre:
Patrick Paultre is Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada. He held the Canada Research Chair in Earthquake Engineering and Dynamics of Structures for fourteen years. Prior to his position at the University of Sherbrooke, he was a stress analyst in the aerospace and nuclear division of DSMA in Toronto, Canada; a structural engineer at United Engineers and Contractors in Philadelphia, USA; and a bridge engineer at Dessau, in Montreal, Canada. His research focuses on dynamics of structures, earthquake-resistant design of concrete structures, behaviour of high-performance concrete structures, dynamic health monitoring of structures, repair of concrete structures with composite materials and dam-reservoir-ice-cover-foundation interaction. Professor Paultre has published three books on dynamics of structures and design of reinforced concrete structures. He has authored more than 300 peer-reviewed papers, conferences papers and technical reports. He is a member of Joint ACI-ASCE Committee 441, Reinforced Concrete Columns. He is also a member of the Canadian Standards Association Committee A23.3, Design of Concrete Structures. Professor Paultre is a Fellow of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering, of the American Concrete Institute and of the Engineering Institute of Canada. Professor Paultre was a recipient of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineering Gzowski’s Medal in 1991 and in 2004, of the ASCE's Moisseiff Award., of the ACI Wason Medal in 2002. Professor Paultre was the recipient of the Adrien-Pouliot Award (2006) and of the Armand-Frappier Quebec Prize, one of the highest awards from the Quebec Government to a person who had a significant research career and who contributed to developing a research institute or who promoted and administered research.
