Biography of Her Excellency Réka Szemerkényi:
Her Excellency Réka Szemerkényi has served as Hungary’s ambassador to the United States since February 2015. From 2011 to 2014, Szemerkényi served as chief advisor on security policy to Hungary's Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, dealing with central European relations and the Balkans and Russia, with a particular emphasis on energy and cyber security. Between 2006 and 2011, she was the chief advisor on international relations to the chairman of the board of Hungarian oil and gas company, MOL Group. Szemerkényi was state secretary for foreign policy and national security advisor to the prime minister from 1998 to 2002, and she was a senior advisor in Hungary’s Ministry of Defense from 1991 to 1994. She has also been a lecturer at Károli Gáspár University in Budapest and Catholic University of the Sacred Heart in Milan, Italy. From 1995 to 1996, she worked as a research associate at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London, studying Central European civil-military reform. Szemerkényi holds a Ph.D. from Pázmány Péter Catholic University and an M.A. in strategic studies from the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University.
