Matchbox Gallery and the Rice Queer Resource center are pleased to present the "Queer Art Series". With the election of our new president, the importance of art within the world of activism has increased thousandfold. This show is meant as a statement of our experiences, our memories and beliefs, and our strength. Featuring the works of student and local artists, the opening reception of the gallery will be April 6th from 7-10 pm at Matchbox Gallery. Alongside the gallery opening, there will be a film screening, lecture and finally the junior recital of Shepherd School student Gabriel Maffuz. “But I’m a Cheerleader” (1999) by Jamie Babbit is a satirical romantic comedy about a teenage girl sent to a conversion camp. With its fantastic production design and the timely message against conversion camps (of which our vice president is in a favor of), the film will be screened on April 2nd, 7 pm at the Rice Cinema. Dr. Brian Riedel is the assistant director and professor within the Center for the Study of Women, Gender, and Sexuality at Rice University. His research and teaching interests include: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer social movements; these movements' complex relationships to feminism and feminist studies; oral and archival history preservation; community engaged research; and the concept of collective memory. His lecture on art and activism within the Queer Community will take place on April 10th, 7 pm at the Rice Cinema.
