Condensed Matter - NON-EQUILIBRIUM QUANTUM PHASES FROM STRONG INTERACTIONS AND PERIODIC DRIVING

Time periodic driving can produce new non-equilibrium quantum phases of matter with dynamical properties that would not be possible in thermal equilibrium. I will discuss recent theoretical and experimental progress in realizing such non-equilibrium phases of matter, and stabilizing them against drive-induced heating using disorder and many-body localization. Examples will include, i) Discrete time-crystals -- in which an interacting system develops spontaneous motion at a period distinct from the periodic driving, ii) Floquet symmetry protected topological phases -- driven and interacting analogs of topological insulators with dynamically protected edge states, and iii) Chiral Floquet phases -- 2d dynamical topological phases whose edge states transport discrete packets of quantum information along the edge during each driving period.
