The study of non-Abelian Majorana zero modes (MZMs) advances our understanding of the fundamental physics in quantum matter and pushes forward the potential applications of such exotic states to topological quantum computation. It is generally argued that MZMs can emerge as defect modes in topological superconductors, e.g. at the boundary of 1D topological superconductors and vortex cores of 2D chiral superconductors. Nevertheless, an interesting question is, whether the existence of non-Abelian MZMs requires that the bulk of a superconductor has to be topologically nontrivial? In this talk I will tell that the answer is No. After a brief introduction to the background of MZMs in topological superconductors, I will focus on our recent developments in realizing MZMs in superconducting/superfluid matters based on the recent experimental progresses. In particular, I will show how the non-Abelian MZMs emerge in the superconductors and superfluids which have a topological or trivial bulk. A few fundamental theorems will be shown, and new experimental proposals for the realizations will be introduced, particularly based on real cold atom systems.
