This study locates Texas divorce within the changing social context of the nineteenth century. It is based primarily on a reading of 1,578 local divorce cases filed prior to1900 as well as state supreme court records. An extensive database including all available information on the litigants of each case provides insight into the influences of class, race, gender, kinship, and community on divorce.
